No matter what visitors are looking for, Florida’s Historic Coast offers everyone a spooky good time
Here are some of the scariest haunts for all types of personalities below. For the Adventurer: Those who are up for an adventure will find it in The Dark of the Moon Ghost Tour. With only a glow stick as lighting, guides share the history and ghost stories of the people who have lived, worked, and visited the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Tours begin at 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday – Sunday evenings until November 29.
For the Investigator: Not afraid of the dark? Have you visited the The Old Jail Museum at night? You’ll hear countless hair-raising stories of supernatural occurrences that have been reported here, including cold spots, strange odors, unexplained banging noises, wailing and laughter, barking dogs, orbs of light and, yes, even an apparition or two.

For the History Buffs: The classic stories of St. Augustine’s most haunted seaside history are back this Halloween season with the Schooner Freedom Haunted Waters Tour. Embark on a haunted journey on the silent waters of the Matanzas and hear the tales based on true history of St. Augustine’s most grim past on October 30 and 31.

For the Mystery Lover:
Those who love a good mystery can play a live game of clue in a fun whodunnit adventure at Heist at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum. The fun takes place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:30-8 p.m. until December 10.

For the Movie Lover: For those who prefer to kick back and relax with a movie, the Florida Agricultural Museum offers its first Drive-in Movie Scare-a-thon. The festivities begin with a kid friendly movie at 6:30, a family appropriate movie at 8:30, and a scary movie for adults at 11 p.m. on October 24.

For the little ones: For a twist on the classic Halloween experience, kids can dress in costume, enjoy Trick-or-Treating fun, and meet eerie bugs and beasts at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in this hands-on Creatures of the Night experience from 5:30-7 p.m. on October 24 and 25.

For Adults Only: On Halloween night, enjoy an adults-only party. Visitors are encouraged to wear their costumes and join the Crew of the Black Raven for this fun Halloween special! Must be 21 or older to embark on this frightfully fun journey.

For the Trick-or-Treater: Ancient City Tours has once again coordinated with the over 300 boutiques, gift shops, bistros and shops on St. George Street, St, Augustine’s premier pedestrian mall, to hand out Halloween candy. On Sunday, October 25, 2-5 p.m. Trick-or-Treating is free to the public and participants are instructed to look for businesses that have orange and black balloons at their entryway. Children, their families, and well behaved, leashed dogs, are encouraged to be in Halloween costumes and take part in these festivities.
For even more fun, on Halloween night, families can put on their costumes, bring their candy and picnic baskets, and join in for a special viewing of the classic film Hocus Pocus. Movie will begin at sunset and is free, though registration is required. This event will comply with CDC social distancing guidelines, and each ticket will admit up to a family of five.
The fun doesn’t stop there! This year, St. Augustine’s Annual Night of Lights celebration is back and is coming early to the historic district! The 27th annual lights display will kick off on November 14 and will run for two months so visitors will have even more time to enjoy the breathtaking lights that adorn the city.

Valentine’s Day — History
Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrsnamed Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly loveflourished.

Throughout the weekend, visitors and residents can enjoy plenty of romantic events and special tastings as they celebrate Valentine’s Day.

NIGHTS OF LIGHTS

Nights of Lights traditionally begins the Saturday before Thanksgiving and continues nightly through February 2, 2020.

Nights of Lights has been listed among the top ten holiday light displays in the world by National Geographic. During Nights of Lights, St. Augustine glows with holiday magic – from the ground to the rooftops. St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights features millions of tiny white lights that create a magical atmosphere in the Nation’s Oldest City, and it’s free of charge.

When is Nights of Lights?

Nights of Lights begins the Saturday before Thanksgiving and continues nightly through February 2nd. The 2019-2020 Nights of Lights will take place every evening from November 23, 2019 to February 2, 2020. Light-Up! Night! kicks off the display on November 23.

Where can you see the lights?

White lights drape the city’s unique Spanish Colonial architecture and glow from the sidewalks to the rooftops, over the Bridge of Lions, along historic buildings, public spaces, hotels, restaurants, and inns throughout approximately 20 blocks of the Nation’s Oldest City’s historic district.

The top two spots to visit for the best views and Nights of Lights selfies are:

1. The Plaza de la Constitución

Get the perfect holiday selfie in front of the Christmas tree in the center of the plaza. There are also live music performances in the plaza on weekends and throughout the holidays.

2. The Bridge of Lions

Walk the bridge to gaze back at the sparkling reflection of the lights along the water.

Is Nights of Lights free?

Yes, this is a free event open to everyone. There’s no need to order tickets to enjoy the displays.

What are the best ways to see the light displays?

Since Nights of Lights covers such an expansive area of St. Augustine, there are plenty of ways to view the lights.

The post Top Things To Do With Kids in St. Augustine, Florida first appeared on Nation's Oldest City.]]>
There is plenty to keep you occupied for a few days and below I will cover my top 8 best things to do with kids in the area. Here’s a family-friendly list of top things to do with kids, which is in no particular order. Perfect for a family holiday in St Augustine.

Top Things to Do in St. Augustine

1 – Sightseeing Trolley Bus Tour
The Old town trolley tour is the oldest and supposedly the best trolley bus tour in St. Augustine. We purchased our tickets late on our day of arrival as they were offering 10% off for the next day. You can also add on additional day tickets for just $5.00 The tour has 23 stops and your ticket also includes free admission to the St Augustine history museum. They also offer packages at an additional cost which include entry to other attractions in St. Augustine.

There are a few places around St Augustine where you can purchase your tickets or pick up a map of the tour. You can also purchase tickets online in advance. Buying online can also save you money as currently an adult ticket online is $23.39 instead of $25.00. With 23 stops you can be assured that you will find plenty to do along the way and as this is a hop on hop off ticket you can get off the bus whenever you fancy. Stops that may be more of an interest to families are Potters wax museum, the harbour for the Black Raven pirate ship cruise and Ecotours, the colonial quarter for the Castillo. Plus Ripleys believe it or not, the pirate and treasure museum, oldest house, old jail tour and the history and oldest store museums.

One thing we did notice is that as the day goes on it can get busier and busier on these trams. Sometimes it’s worth waiting at a more popular stop as more people may be getting off there.

They also do a ghost and gravestones tour which is priced separately.

2- Castillo De San Marcos – The Fort
The Castillo De San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. It is the main site of interest that you will spot when you arrive in St. Augustine. We stopped off on the trolley tour to have a look around. We were there for just over an hour which included watching them light the cannon. It’s not a massive place however it is worth a visit not just to see the men dressed in uniform to light the cannon but for the beauty of this fort next to the sea.

One thing I would say is to be careful with little ones while visiting the Castillo is their proximity to the edge. There are no railings around the top, neither is there any on the walls by the sea. They have also recently increased their entrance costs to $15.00 per adult, children will remain free. This has increased $5.00 for our visit and we weren’t particularly impressed with paying $10! It is worth a visit though, especially if you are American and are somewhat lacking in history where you live.

3 – Boat Tour
There are quite a few boat tours that run from the harbour at St. Augustine. Not all of them run all year round so during our visit in February we only had a couple of tours to choose from. From reading reviews on Tripadvisor we chose the St. Augustine Eco Tour as it has 5 stars out of 5 and over 700 reviews.

The captain of the boat was friendly and full of interesting facts. He did his best to find us birds and dolphins. I was really the only one, in the end, who spotted the dolphins. It was a case of blink and you missed them. I believe there’s a lot more to see in the warmer months. It didn’t matter that we didn’t see a huge amount as it was lovely seeing St. Augustine from the water. Plus our son was allowed to drive the boat for a bit.

The tour lasted for 1 hour 30 minutes. We paid $40 per adult and $35 for a child (age 3 to 12). Children under 3 are $15.00. The boats are relatively small and seat up to 14 people. We only had two other people on our tour. You can read all about our boat trip in my review – Eco Tours St Augustine Florida | A Review – Dolphin Tour.

4 – Miniature Golf
There are two miniature golf courses at St Augustine beach. There’s Anastasia and Fiesta Falls. Plus bayfront mini golf over by the harbour. We chose to play Fiesta Falls as it looked the most fun. There are 18 holes set around waterfalls, a pirate ship and a cave. It is especially fun if you play as the sun is setting. It was really novel seeing a change in the light and it was certainly more challenging.

Price is $8.99 for an adult and $7.75 for a child (aged 3-12). This was good value for money. They are open from 10am until 10pm nearly all year round.

Free Things to do in Saint Augustine
5 – Visit the Beach
The beach at St Augustine has the most stunning golden sand. Enjoy spending a lovely time on the beach digging holes and splashing in the sea.

If you park near the pier there’s a splash park that you are free to use plus a playground for the little ones. There’s plenty to splash in and keep the kids entertained if they need cooling down or have had enough of the sand. It’s always good to have a couple of free ideas on a list for kids.

6 – Alligator Farm Zoological Park
St Augustine’s Alligator farm is located near the lighthouse and not too far from the beach. It is one of Florida’s oldest attractions as it opened in 1893. They have daily wildlife shows and plenty of animals to see. As well as alligators they have exotic birds, crocodiles, snakes, lemurs and more. For an additional cost you can zip wire over the alligators over 2 different courses. (children must be at least 8 years old).

Currently, an adult ticket is $25.99 and children aged 3-11 are $14.99. Under 3’s are free. You can print a $1.00 off voucher from their website.

7 – Visit a Museum
There’s one thing that St. Augustine is not short of and that’s museums, there’s at least 23 to choose from. Below I will outline which could be the most interesting ones to visit as a family.

Potter’s Wax Museum – “The characters range from musicians and artists to presidents and kings, from Cleopatra to Princess Diana, and much more. At Potter’s Wax Museum, visitors can meet Queen Victoria, Austin Powers, William Shakespeare and Harry Potter all on the same spot. “

An adult ticket is $10.59 and it’s $7.41 for a child aged 6-12. 5 and under are free. You can purchase slightly discounted tickets online.

Ripley’s Believe it or not – “Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum was founded by Robert Leroy Ripley to showcase some of the amazing artefacts he had collected in his extensive travels around the world and documented in his famous comic strip, “Believe It or Not!”. His collection of oddities and curiosities are now housed in an entertaining museum for the public to experience.”

An adult ticket is $13.99 and a child ticket for 5-11-year-olds is $6.99. Under 5’s are free.

Pirate and Treasure Museum – “The St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum offers complete interactive exhibits that transport visitors to the time of plundering pirates and swashbuckling adventures. In this museum, guests can experience what it was like to be a pirate in the famed Port Royal, Jamaica—a place where pirates were protected and easily traded among themselves and the natives in Jamaica.”

An adult ticket is $14.99 and $7.99 for a child. It does not state what age a child needs to be online.

All prices are subject to change. Please check the websites for further details before you leave.

Holidays are built around traditions and few holidays have more great family traditions than the Fourth of July: great food, outdoor band concerts, a day with friends and family, and of course, fireworks! They all come together in a grand celebration, and there’s no better place to celebrate the nation’s Independence Day than in the Nation’s Oldest City and no better way than Fireworks Over The Matanzas.

First There’s Music

Starting at 6:00pm one of the region’s most popular big bands, The All Star Orchestra, returns to the Plaza de la Constitución for a two-hour show filled with big band and swing music along with all the traditional patriotic favorites. The All Star Orchestra’s performance from the Plaza’s Gazebo runs from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The concert is free and those attending should bring lounge chairs for seating.

Then There’s Fireworks!

Fireworks Over The Matanzas, the highlight of St. Augustine’s traditional July 4th activities, has become synonymous with celebrating Independence Day in the Nation’s Oldest City. The spectacular aerial display of pyrotechnics high over Matanzas Bay begins at 9:30pm.

The 20-minute display is tightly choreographed to a stirring soundtrack of great popular and patriotic music delivered over an extensive sound system transforming the entire Bayfront between the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and the Bridge of Lions into a theatre of sight and sound.

Where are the best spots to view the fireworks?

The best viewing spots are along the bayfront between the Castillo and the Bridge of Lions. You can also reserve tickets to climb to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse for a great view.

Where can I park?

View our parking guide here for information about garage parking, street parking, and the ParkStAug app.

Other July 4th Weekend Things to Do

In addition to firework celebrations, there are plenty of things to do throughout the holiday.

On July 3rd, enjoy the Music by the Sea Concert, a free weekly concert series at the St. Johns County Pier from 7-9 p.m. Ain’t 2 Proud will be performing at 6 p.m.
